Vulture reports that Terry Gilliam’s long-postponed, probably cursed The Man Who Killed Don Quixote has once again been delayed, owing to a loss of funding. When last we checked in on the project, Adam Driver had signed on to star, replacing a steady stream of other actors—Johnny Depp, Ewan McGregor, John Hurt—all knocked off the project like the unwanted Cheerios of an angry, omnipotent toddler-God. Meanwhile, Amazon was reportedly interested in helping Gilliam make the movie, although it’s not clear if that deal ever fully solidified. Filming was apparently supposed to start next week—with Driver reportedly still in place—but, according to Gilliam, “I had this producer, a Portuguese chap, who claimed he’d get all the money together in time. And a few weeks ago, he proved that he didn’t have the money.”
Still, the director remains unstoppably confident that the movie will eventually be finished. “We are still marching forward. It is not dead. I will be dead before the film is,” said Gilliam, who’s 75, and who’s apparently hell-bent on getting “Gilliamesque” to replace “quixotic” as English’s go-to word for “deludedly optimistic at the expense of all reason.”
