That hypothetical Logan’s Run remake could become a hypothetical franchise
When Logan’s Run, the seminal 1976 science fiction classic, is ultimately remade for modern audiences, it may very well be a multi-film franchise, according to writer/producer Simon Kinberg (X-Men: Days Of Future Past). The original film—based on William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson’s 1967 novel set in the dystopian world of 2116, where people are exterminated once they reached the wizened old age of 30—does seem like it could fit pretty easily into the current craze of movies about young, attractive people who run around being young, attractive, and a little bit dirty in a future slightly grimier than our present.
“It’s something that potentially is their Hunger Games kind of franchise that is about a younger audience for a younger audience with a big idea,” Kinberg explained to Collider. “And Logan’s Run, as you know, is the granddaddy of Maze Runner and Hunger Games and so many of these books and movies now. So yeah, they’re seeing it as a potentially really big franchise.”
Kinberg says that his vision of the remake, which still does not have a director attached, does not stray very far from the film that Michael Anderson made 40 years ago. “There’s a lot from the original movie,” he says. “The setup is great, I think there’s a lot of world creation that’s pretty awesome as well, though ultimately that’ll be the director’s domain … And then there’s a lot of—I guess I would call it reinterpretation from the original film rather than just a whole scale recreation.”
