It’s been over a year since we last heard anything about the big-screen remake of ’80s action series The Fall Guy, despite our constant entreaties to both heaven and earth, and incessant 3 a.m. phone calls to Heather Thomas, who wasn’t as annoyed as you might think. But at last, some progress: Deadline reports that Martin Campbell is in early discussions to follow up Green Lantern with another exceedingly optimistic stab at creating a new franchise, taking the helm on an updated version of the story of a Hollywood stuntman who catches criminals on the side, using only his crazy stuntman skills and a truck roughly the size of the entire West Coast, which certainly makes finding them easier.
The script is being prepped by the suddenly very busy Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz—the Thor and X-Men: First Class scribes who will also tackle ’80s nostalgia and vehicles-as-dick-metaphors in their Top Gun sequel—and while Walter Parkes is still on board as producer, it’s unclear whether DreamWorks is still involved. Still, the project seems likely to become a reality soon, what with the cult success of Drive reinvigorating interest in the idea of vigilante stuntmen, and the reserves of ’80s action series that can be revived dwindling to dangerous, Stingray levels. Remember Stingray? Heather brought that up last night, and we were like, “You mean Street Hawk?” And she was like, “No, Stingray—look it up on Wikipedia. Wait, what’s Street Hawk?” And then before either of us knew it, the sun was up.
