That old scamp Sacha Baron Cohen wants Sarah Palin to be his date to the Golden Globes
Never one to shy away from taking a poke at American politics’ most relevant and respected figures, Sacha Baron Cohen issued an invitation to Sarah Palin today, inviting her to be his date to the Golden Globes. Baron Cohen’s headed to the awards on behalf of his new Showtime show, Who Is America?, which snagged him a nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series—Musical or Comedy.
Palin was originally supposed to show up on the series, having been duped—along with numerous other conservative figures, including Roy Moore and Dick Cheney—into an interview with one of Baron Cohen’s bizarre alter egos. Her segment was ultimately cut from the show, though, although she did get a special thank you note in the series’ credits, acknowledging her role in promoting it through a series of loud complaints.
Baron Cohen took it one step further this afternoon, issuing a statement directly to Palin after his nomination was announced:
I appreciate the Hollywood Foreign Press for recognizing me, which luckily is something that none of the guests on the show did. This show was a labor of love for over two years. It is a shame they overlooked the amazing performances by the rest of the cast, particularly Dick Cheney and Roy Moore. Meanwhile Ms. Palin, despite being cut from the show, I hope you will accept my invitation to be my date for the ceremony.
