So far, all the official announcements about Better Call Saul—the Breaking Bad spinoff starring Bob Odenkirk’s lovably slimy attorney at law, Saul Goodman—have characterized the project as a prequel that would cover Goodman’s pre-Walter White days. But then again, they had to say that, because the question of whether Saul Goodman would even have any post-Walter White days was yet to be resolved. Now, in an interview with IGN, Odenkirk has blurred the lines a bit, saying that producers Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould have “talked about prequel, but they’ve also talked to me about sequel, and they’ve also talked to me about a mix of prequel and sequel.” So we may get to see both Saul Goodman’s origin story and the aftereffects of his year as Walter White’s strip-mall consigliere.
The precise formula for Better Call Saul is still being tweaked in other ways, presumably to maximize its purity and thereby its appeal to a shadowy cabal of Eastern European buyers. When the IGN interviewer referred to reports that cast the spinoff as “70-percent comedy, 30-percent drama,” Odenkirk told him that no, he’s got the percentages all wrong: “It’s going to be 70-percent drama and 30-percent comedy,” Odenkirk said. Such machinations are normal for a TV show in development. For example, Breaking Bad itself was originally going to be the story of a high school chemistry teacher who lives a contented but vaguely unsatisfying life, with every episode was going to consist of Walter White staring off into the middle distance while he gives a lecture about hydrogen bonds. “But what if he wore a hat?” mused Vince Gilligan, and a hit was born.
