The 2008 Tony Awards totally happened

It's true, though judging by the ratings for this Sunday's telecast, very few knew or cared: The show was the lowest-rated Tony Awards ever, drawing only 6.19 million viewers. For those of you who missed it–which is apparently, almost everyone–here's a quick recap.

The big winners of the night were August: Osage County and South Pacific, which snagged five and seven awards, respectively, including Best Play for August: Osage County and Best Revival Of A Musical for South Pacific. In The Heights, Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical about a Puerto Rican family living in Washington Heights–which led the nominations with 13–won four awards, including Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Original Score. The revival of Gypsy also scored three performance awards, including Best Leading Actress In A Musical for powerhouse stage actress Patti LuPone, whose last Tony came in 1979 for Evita. LuPone's brassy, breathless acceptance speech was one of the evening's highlights, rivaled only by Lin-Manuel Miranda's sorta-freestyle thank-you rap.

Of course, there were also performances, lots of them, including a celebration of The Lion King's 10th anniversary, a performance by the original cast of Rent to commemorate the show's closing this year, and highlights from all the nominated musicals, including winner In The Heights.
