The 2018 Beyond Fest lineup looks positively chilling, in a good way
We’re big fans of genre film festivals here at The A.V. Club. Fantastic Fest, Cinepocalypse, The Overlook Film Festival—there are too many to attend them all, but we do our best. So when we say the lineup for Beyond Fest has us pretty excited, please know we’re not just filling column inches. This shit is lit.
Held at Hollywood’s Egyptian Theater for 14 days, from Wednesday, September 26 through Tuesday, October 9, the genre festival spans horror, action, fantasy, martial arts, and more, with a mix of premieres and revival features to raise the eyebrows of even the most jaded cinematic skeptic. Here’s just a few of the treats for those willing to make the journey to help preserve and support the famed 1922 theater (proceeds go to the Egyptian’s American Cinematheque nonprofit association):
In terms of West Coast premieres, there’s David Gordon Green’s new Halloween, new Drew Goddard joint Bad Times At The El Royale, Gasper Noe’s Climax, S. Craig Zahler’s new crime opus Dragged Across Concrete, Steve McQueen’s Widows, Jonas Åckerlund’s Lords Of Chaos, and more. As far as older titles getting the big-screen treatment again, you can look forward to showings of the original versions of Maniac and Black Christmas, Bubba Ho-Tep, The Monster Squad, and perhaps best of all, a new 4k restoration of Slava Tsukerman’s mind-bending cult classic, Liquid Sky. On top of all this, you’ve got the David Cronenberg retrospective we previously announced.
You can find a complete listing of the film festival’s offerings on the website, and tickets are available now.
