Last year, the ranking-averse American Film Institute decided to break the rules of year-end lists even further by putting 11 movies on its list of the top 10 films of the year. Thankfully, things are back in order this year, at least in terms of following arbitrary rules about how many top things you’re allowed to pick in a year. However, there’s still no order to the picks, so it’s impossible to actually determine which movie or TV show the AFI thought was The Best.
The AFI’s favorite movies are fairly predictable, with critical darlings Carol, Room, and Mad Max: Fury Road all making an appearance. There’s one movie on the list, though, that hasn’t popped up on many others yet, and it’s one that there’s been some talk about on the internet for the last few days (or years, really): Star Wars: The Force Awakens. That probably won’t convince any pessimists the movie will be terrible, but it’s something.
The picks on the TV side are similarly predictable, though a lot of the choices just premiered this year. Game Of Thrones, The Americans, and Homeland are there, but so is Mr. Robot, Master Of None, and Better Call Saul. It’s tough to argue with a list like that, especially because they’re not numbered.
