In a startling example of an A.V. Club comment thread reverberating out into the wider world, The Associated Press has reportedly issued a correction for an article that confused alleged murderer, real-estate heir, and subject of HBO’s The Jinx Robert Durst with Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst.
The mistake originated with an item that was sent out on a California broadcast wire that read,
A Louisiana State Police trooper says millionaire Robert Durst has been booked on weapons charges in that state — on top of a first-degree murder charge lodged by Los Angeles authorities. Trooper Melissa Matey told the Associated Press that an arrest warrant was issued for the former Limp Bizkit frontman and he was rebooked in the Orleans Parish Jail on Monday under two new charges.
The item, while not released directly to the public, nevertheless made its way onto various media blogs, namely because it’s hilarious. The AP has yet to issue an apology for calling Fred Durst the “former” frontman of Limp Bizkit when the group is still active and played a nu-metal cruise in January, one of many signs that, at this point, both Dursts should probably just give up.
