The Avengers continues to make more money than almost all the other movies that made money

Pointing to a rapidly approaching day when the nation's net worth will be measured as a percentage of funds not controlled by Marvel, The Avengers continues to take all the money, with the not even two-month-old film poised to cross the $600 million domestic box office mark today. That makes The Avengers one of only three films to claim that achievement, and it seems entirely plausible that it eventually could surpass Titanic's gross of $658 million to take the No. 2 spot—particularly if the Internet makes a big thing out of doing so, as it is so often wont to do with demonstrations of devotion. Still, were they not satisfied with it already being the No. 3 film both domestically and worldwide—where it's racked up $1.4 billion globally, meaning it should basically just try to replace Greece—Avengers acolytes would have to work much harder to unseat James Cameron's other chart-topping hit at No. 1, Avatar, which remains the all-time champion with $749.6 million. And delving into the same combination of immersive fandom and crushing depression that drove Avatar's box office—man, it's just not worth it.
