The 12th season of The Bachelorette is currently unfolding before our eyes, with the lovelorn Joelle “JoJo” Fletcher courting various broad-shouldered eligible bachelors (and Chad). Fletcher’s been whittling away at the list of prospects in the sunny environs of Argentina, which made her appearance on The Tonight Show last night all the more surprising.
The interview would have been a real coup for Jimmy Fallon, taking place during the season as it appeared to, but it turned out to be Kristen Wiig. The actress and fellow Saturday Night Live alum usually conducts her Tonight Show interviews in character, giving increasingly less convincing performances as Peyton Manning, Harry Styles, and Daenerys Targaryen. Wiig does a better job of feigning familiarity with The Bachelorette—she knows enough to give a rose to Fallon, and that the Fantasy Suite sees more action than viewers realize. (Also, “Scotchie” could totally be the nickname of one of the contestants.)
The host eventually brings them around to talk ever so briefly about Ghostbusters, that movie no one else is talking about, which is presumably why Wiig had to pose as the Bachelorette in order to make conversation.
