The battle for the Queen Of The South’s throne begins
Here’s what’s up in the world of television for Thursday, June 8. All times are Eastern.
Top pick
Queen Of The South (USA, 10 p.m.): Later this summer, things will heat up (or will they cool down?) in the fight to control seven premium-cable kingdoms. But before all that, across The Narrow Sea and in the realm of basic cable, Queen Of The South stages its own power struggle. Tensions will rise as Teresa (Alice Braga) rises through the ranks of the Vargas cartel, placing her at odds with her own sense of morals—and also the leader of said cartel, Camila Vargas (Veronica Falcón).
Wild card
American Boyband (Viceland, 10:30 p.m.): ABC has recruited Timbaland, Baby Spice, The Cute One from The Backstreet Boys (or was Nick Carter BSB’s Heartthrob?), and Rita Ora to put together the next great boy band. This is not that show. This is a Viceland docuseries following multi-hyphenate Kevin Abstract on his first headlining tour, where he was joined by members of Brockhampton, the artistic collective he grew from a post on a Kanye West fan forum. It sounds specifically engineered to sail over the heads of anyone born before 1997, but hey: There’s a solid Pimp My Ride joke in the premiere episode, so people born in the late ’80s are set, too.
