Pippin has finally found his “Corner Of The Sky” and it’s on the silver screen. According to Deadline, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are reteaming with The Weinstein Company to produce the beloved 1972 musical for the big screen. They're joined by screenwriter James Ponsoldt (The Spectacular Now), who will adapt the original script by Roger O. Hirson. Zadan and Meron previously produced the Oscar-winning musical Chicago with the Weinsteins, as well as the movie-musical adaptation of Hairspray, and the recent ratings hit The Sound Of Music Live! for NBC.
Despite its rather meta plotting about a troupe of actors performing the story of a prince named Pippin who's searching for meaning in his life, then rebelling against the very play he is starring in, Pippin’s catchy tunes by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked) have made it a longtime staple of high schools and community theatres everywhere. The recent circus-themed Broadway production won four Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical. And even those unfamiliar with the stage show have probably heard a handful of the songs before; they've been covered by Petula Clark, the Jackson Five, and the Supremes.
The film won’t begin production for some time, so for now check out the Broadway revival cast performing “Corner Of The Sky” and “Magic To Do” at the 2013 Tony Awards, then either fawn over Patina Miller’s performance or remind yourself why you avoid musical theatre in the first place.
