The 89th annual Academy Awards are this Sunday, and to celebrate the end of another long awards season, The A.V. Club is sitting down every day this week to discuss the major Oscar categories, offering thoughts of who will win and who should. This time around, we’re taking a close look at the Best Director race, where the two front-runners are both bound to make Oscar history. Will Moonlight’s Barry Jenkins become the first black filmmaker to take home the Best Director statue? Or will La La Land’s Damien Chazelle become the youngest ever winner in the category, breaking a record that’s stood for 86 years? And do any of the category’s dark horses really stand a chance?
