The Big Short takes home the big prize at the Producers Guild Awards

The Producers Guild Of America Awards ceremony was held Saturday night, affording the hardworking, behind-the-scenes stiffs a chance to be front and center along with A-list presenters and performers like Michael B. Jordan and Golden Globe winner Lady Gaga. The PGA Awards are also notable (especially in the last decade or so) for their ability to predict the subsequent winner of the Best Picture Oscar. So the Golden Globes can keep their celebrity-led shenanigans, and the critics and people their choices, because the PGA Awards are the real arbiters of (another awards body’s) taste.

Although the PGA recognized far more producing efforts of the small screen, the winner of the guild’s top movie prize was the biggest news to come out of the event, as the PGA awarded the Darryl F. Zanuck Award to Adam McKay’s mortgage-crisis comedy, The Big Short. The PGA has successfully “predicted” the Best Picture Oscar winner over the last eight years, which means its preference for The Big Short has probably shifted the film’s place in the Oscar race. So although The Revenant cleaned up at the Golden Globes recently, we could see some very bad wigs take home the coveted statuette next month.

The other film-producing award winners were Inside Out for outstanding animated film and Amy for outstanding documentary. And in TV, Game Of Thrones was recognized in the episodic drama-producing category, while Fargo won the David L. Wolper Award for outstanding (producing of) long-form television. The complete list of winners is below, which should serve to whet your appetite for the Screen Actors Guild Awards on January 30, not to mention the Academy Awards on February 28.
