Despite the fact that Black Eyed Peas songs are the manifestation of our collective, self-loathing unconscious, the collaborative soundtrack to all our most mediocre desires and experiences, unsigned artist Phoenix Phenom still claims that she dreamed the dream of “Boom Boom Pow” before anyone else, back when it was called “Boom Dynamite.” Now the lawyers working her case say they’ve discovered yet another song that the Black-Eyed Peas stole from someone instead of just whipping up one more primitive pep rally beat and having Fergie talk about her body: Texas songwriter Bryan Pringle claims that his “Take A Dive”—just one of the many demos he’s been quixotically sending Interscope, UMG Recordings, and EMI for the past 10 years—was copied on “I Gotta Feeling,” the going-out anthem of fortyish women everywhere. The Black Eyed Peas have now been handed two separate lawsuits over the songs, claiming that the group has engaged in “a pattern and practice of intentional copyright infringement with respect to the unlawful copying of songs of unknown or lesser-known artists.” Considering their many crimes against music, this is sort of like going after Al Capone for tax evasion.
