The cast of Kinky Boots lambasts anti-trans bathroom laws through song

Leave it to the cast of a Broadway musical to distill a complicated political issue into a simple two-word statement. In this case the statement is “Just Pee,” and it comes from the musical Kinky Boots in response to the anti-trans bathroom laws that are being proposed across the country, and which have officially taken hold in North Carolina (you can learn more here). The musical just released a delightful PSA requesting that everyone calm the fuck down about the non-issue of where people pee.

The video is a riff on the musical’s finale “Just Be” and the original lyrics, “Just be who you wanna be” are rewritten as “Just pee where you wanna pee.” The musical—which is based on the 2005 British comedy starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Joel Edgerton—centers on a drag queen named Lola who teams up with a small-town shoe factory to manufacture stiletto boots that are sturdy enough for men.

Kinky Boots writers Harvey Fierstein and Cyndi Lauper are behind the PSA and appear in the video as well. According to a statement from Fierstein:

So, you don’t like transgender people? Have the balls to honestly say it. Today’s bathroom controversy is fueled by the same bigots that sought to ban gay and lesbian teachers forty years ago. All these years later they’re still hiding behind the claim that they’re only protecting their children. These discussions are great opportunities to educate and strengthen the bonds that make us all one human family. But when I see discussions on social media proposing a men’s room for adult males, a ladies’ room for adult females, a little girls’ room for little girls, a little boys’ room for little boys and then another pair of bathrooms for little boys with a parent and little girls with a parent… Well, it’s time to take a step back and laugh at our own absurdity. This video is a reminder that sometimes we go to the bathroom just to pee

Lauper is set to perform in North Carolina this weekend, where the proceeds of her concert will go toward fighting the state’s HB2 bill.
