The Coens’ ancient Rome movie is probably Hail Caesar with George Clooney

During the press tour for Inside Llewyn Davis, writer/directors Joel and Ethan Coen have been teasing ideas for what sounds like at least a couple upcoming films, including a "sandal drama" set in ancient Rome and some sort of musical comedy set in the world of opera. Now more information about the former film may have come out in an interview with Thompson On Hollywood. It turns out it’s not necessarily a straight historical story, but rather the long-in-development Hail Caesar, a film about a “1920s matinee film idol who takes on an Ancient Rome epic.” In other words, the kind of layered look at the movie business that would interest the brothers behind Barton Fink. George Clooney has been rumored to star in the film, completing the Coens’ “Numbskull Trilogy” of the still-underrated O Brother Where Art Thou?and rightfully discarded Intolerable Cruelty. The Coens always have multiple projects in the mix, but since Joel mentions that “there’s a good chance [Hail Caesar] would be next,” this definitely looks like the frontrunner.
