Thanks to the government’s assault on women’s reproductive rights over the past year, The Handmaid’s Tale—a story in which the few fertile women left in the world are reduced to incubators by an oppressive regime—became unfortunately timely. What the cast and creators of the Emmy-winning drama didn’t expect was for fans to co-opt imagery from the show, most notably Ane Crabtree’s iconic handmaids costume, to protest the government’s policies. We spoke with the cast and creators at the season-two premiere about the fan response to the show, and the joy of seeing the costume become a feminist statement.
