The critics choose Fargo and Orange Is The New Black
The fourth annual Critics’ Choice Television Awards were held in Los Angeles last night, and although there will truly be no justice in this world until RuPaul wins Best Reality Host, overall the critics chose well. Fargo and Orange Is The New Black both won three awards each, including Best Mini-Series and Best Comedy Series, with Best Drama Series winner Breaking Bad following close behind with two. Allison Janney led the race in individual awards, winning both Best Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series for Mom and Best Guest Performer In A Drama Series for Masters Of Sex, an award that led her to quip, “I just came.”
Matthew McConaughey won the award for Best Actor In A Drama Series for True Detective, his second Critics’ Choice Award this year (he also won the Best Actor award for Dallas Buyers Club at the film awards in January). Other big winners at last night’s telecast were Tatiana Maslany (Best Actress In A Drama Series for Orphan Black), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Best Actress In A Comedy Series for Veep), Billy Bob Thornton (Best Actor In A Movie Or Mini-Series for Fargo), Jessica Lange (Best Actress In A Movie Or Mini-Series for American Horror Story: Coven), and Ryan Murphy, who received a statue declaring him a genius. The critics also bestowed their blessings upon Archer (Best Animated Series) and Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey (Best Reality Series) in what can only be interpreted as a silent gesture of support for marijuana legalization.
In a departure from the People’s Choice Awards, many of the stars came out in person to collect their crystal statuettes. In fact, pretty much the only thing the two awards shows have in common is their mutual affection for Jim Parsons, who won his second Critics’ Choice award for Best Actor In A Comedy Series.
