The Cubs take on the Indians in this World Series movie mashup
The 2016 World Series began last night, and the participants were two of baseball’s most notoriously hard-luck franchises: the Chicago Cubs and the Cleveland Indians, neither of which has actually won it all in decades. A Cubs-Indians series sounds like a fantasy scenario from Hollywood, which may have been the inspiration for “Movie World Series 2016,” a clever movie mashup by Ross Taylor. Largely culling clips from two lighthearted comedies, David S. Ward’s Major League from 1989 and Daniel Stern’s Rookie Of The Year from 1993, Taylor has managed to piece together a pretty convincing game between these two continually thwarted teams. At heart, this is a pitcher’s duel featuring two of the game’s most eccentric hurlers. On the mound for the Cubs is Henry Rowengartner (Thomas Ian Nicholas), a 12-year-old with an arm like a cannon. Pitching for the Tribe is Ricky “Wild Thing” Vaughn (Charlie Sheen), who needs to wear thick, horn rimmed glasses to even find the strike zone.
But Taylor’s mashup doesn’t limit itself to the action on the field. Thanks to a clip borrowed from Saturday Night Live, announcer Harry Caray (Will Ferrell) talks about this “very exciting World Series” from the Weekend Update desk. This appears to be from 1997, the last time the Indians were actually in the Series. Up in the stands, meanwhile, Cubs fans Ferris Bueller (Matthew Broderick) and his nerdy friend Cameron (Alan Ruck) attempt to psych out the opposing team’s batters with a little good-natured razzing. John Candy and Bob Uecker are among the commentators calling the game from the booth. In the end, at least according to this video, the Cubs prove too much for the Indians and emerge triumphant. In far off Hill Valley, Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) learns the news via a floating holographic billboard. If only he could travel back in time to the beginning of the season and bet on the Cubs.
