It’s pilot pickup season, that magical pupal stage where future TV butterflies are still just a promise waiting to blossom, particularly if they are dramas that take place in a town where wizards and fairy tales are real. Not to be outdone by other networks and their high concepts, The CW has announced its own slate of in-development dramas—and although CW president Dawn Ostroff has made it plain that she thinks the network needs to launch more medical, legal, and cop franchises, because there are not enough of those, this is The CW, home of The Vampire Diaries and Gossip Girl, so even these new procedurals come with a trendy twist. In addition to the zeitgeist-y zombie uprising show Awakening that’s been previously reported, here’s what’s potentially coming to The CW:
Hart Of Dixie, a dramedy from The O.C. and Gossip Girl team of Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, concerns a big-time, New York city slicker doctor lady who takes over a medical practice in “a small Southern town inhabited by an eclectic and eccentric group of characters.” (Is it time to remake Northern Exposure already? Or is that “again”?)
Heavenly, about a female attorney who’s partnered with—record scratch—a former angel who’s now human, where “she saves clients’ butts while he saves their souls.” The show will find the fallen angel dealing with his newfound human feelings and emotions “sometimes to hilarious effect.” The rest of the time, presumably, it will just make you think.
Cooper And Stone, a procedural about two female detectives in Chicago who are also best friends, and who are “equally adept at discussing fashion, music, pop culture as they are solving homicides.” They’ll investigate murders while attempting to keep blood off of their expensive shoes and making witty references to the current big names in entertainment, and the other cops will be like, “Cooper and Stone, y'all two are on a whole ‘nother level!” And they’ll laugh and be like, “We’re the Lady Gaga of police work!” Or something like that.
