The CW is giving the old EDM thing another go with a new show
Having learned nothing—or possibly the wrong thing—from the disastrous opening of We Are Your Friends, the CW and CBS TV Studios are working on The Drop, a drama centered on Miami’s electronic dance music scene. Deadline reports the show will follow a washed-up DJ whose life and career are revived when he finds a “gifted protégé.” The up-and-coming DJ character happens to be a black woman, which the publication notes is a rarity in the EDM world. This isn’t the network’s first EDM rodeo (rave?); two years ago, the CW was working on a similar idea with NCIS: Los Angeles showrunner Shane Brennan and DJ Tiësto.
No actors are attached yet, but the show comes from Nashville executive producer R.J. Cutler and DJ Steve Angello (formerly of Swedish House Mafia). They’ll produce the show along with writer-musician Kyle Jarrow (Sky-Pony), who will also write the script (or scripts, depending on just how lucky the network is feeling). Jarrow previously worked with the CW on Trigger and Ze, two shows that haven’t made it out of development.
