The CW orders Dynasty pilot, and possibly some shoulderpads
The CW, riding high on its Riverdale reboot, has turned its eye to the past once more. Entertainment Weekly reports that the network is following through on its Dynasty retelling, and has ordered a pilot from Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. The Gossip Girl creators have, of course, put some new twists on the old, sequined tale. This new Dynasty “will be told primarily through the perspectives of two women at odds.” Fallon Carrington will duke it out with her billionaire father’s fiancée. The original had a similar “not-so-wicked stepmother” concept, but this time around, the real clash will be cultural. Krystle Carrington is now Cristal, a Hispanic woman “marrying into this WASP family and America’s most powerful class.”
The rest of the synopsis teases that “in an age where dynasties appear everywhere—from reality TV to the polling booths—this epic drama features the one percent in all its glitz and gloss, while exposing the dark underbelly: a corrupt world built on backroom deals, betrayal, and, in some cases, murder.” Unfortunately, they’re probably not going to have some kind of Battle Royale scenario for these scions, but one can hope.
Elsewhere in the CW’s wheelings and dealings, the network picked up Greg Berlanti’s Searchers series, which sounds like a Supernatural retread. It’s about “a group of unlikely heroes who find themselves on the journey of a lifetime. Ten years after the death of their parents, a pragmatic brother and free-spirited sister are forced to team up when they learn that their mother’s terrifying and bizarre stories may be a road map to discovering the great legends, myths, and unexplainable mysteries of the world.” That show is really never going to die, is it?
