Sing a celebratory song and then come back from the dead or something, because The CW has ordered additional episodes of its freshman series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and sophomore series iZombie. According to Variety, the dark musical comedy Crazy Ex-Girlfriend will have five episodes added to its first season for a total of 18 episodes, giving Rebecca a little extra time in West Covina, California (Just two hours from the beach! Four in traffic!) to win back Josh, err, get her life back on track. Additionally, iZombie has gained six more episodes to its order for a total of 19 episodes in its second season. (Around the time of their respective premieres in October, The CW ordered additional scripts for both series, which led to this formal order expansion.)
While Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is still struggling with ratings, the musical has shown gains in recent weeks. As a lead-in to The CW’s breakout series Jane The Virgin, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s first six episodes averaged a 0.34 rating in the 18-49 demographic. Its lead and co-creator Rachel Bloom—who definitely does not steal pets in real life—has been a standout star this fall, and the musical numbers, particularly the ones led by her, make Crazy Ex-Girlfriend one of the year’s strangest and most promising new series. In addition to Bloom, who co-created the series alongside The Devil Wears Prada writer Aline Brosh McKenna, the show stars Santino Fontana, Donna Lynne Champlin, Vincent Rodriguez III, Pete Gardner, and Vella Lovell as the often unhappy inhabitants of West Covina.
Rob Thomas’s iZombie is faring better in its second season. With The Flash as its lead-in, the supernatural series is averaging a 0.82 rating in the 18-49 demographic and pulls 1.9 million viewers in Nielsen’s “live plus-3” estimates. The DC Comics series stars Rose McIver along with Malcolm Goodwin, Rahul Kohli, Robert Buckley, and genre TV’s beloved David Anders. With six more episodes added, season two will pack in even more zombie drama (zom-dram?) and more zombie romance (zom-rom?).
