The CW pairs Riverdale and Dynasty on Wednesdays
The CW released its 2017-18 schedule this morning, making Wednesday something of a throwback evening by pairing its Archie Comics riff Riverdale with its new Dynasty reboot from Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage. The network’s strategy with the two properties, both of which have throwback qualities, is similar. “I think that Dynasty is not unlike what we had with Riverdale last year in that we had a built-in audience of people who knew the Archie characters and our job was to bring them in as well as a new audience,” The CW’s Executive Vice President for Marketing and Digital Programs Rick Haskins said during a press conference call this morning, noting that those who are already familiar with the property will “watch it again out of curiosity.” CW President Mark Pedowitz added that returning to Dynasty was a “no-brainer” given the pedigree of Schwartz and Savage, who created The O.C. and Gossip Girl.
The new schedule also finds the critically acclaimed duo of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Jane The Virgin booted to Friday nights. Pedowitz attributed Jane’s move to its strength on ”delayed view and digital viewing.” Meanwhile, the new military show Valor will move into its old Monday home behind Supergirl.
