The CW passes on Supernatural spin-off Wayward Sisters
Toying recklessly with forces behind its comprehension or ability to control—i.e., pissed-off Supernatural fans—The CW announced today that it would be passing on Wayward Sisters, a planned spin-off to its recently renewed monster-hunting show. The news comes despite a groundswell of fan support for the project, which would have starred Kim Rhodes, Briana Buckmaster, Katherine Ramdeen, Kathryn Love Newton, Clark Backo, and Yadira Guevara-Prip, as a team of women fighting against the various demons and extradimensional evils that so frequently bedevil the Supernatural world.
The CW gave the series a backdoor pilot earlier this year, introducing fans of Supernatural to the team (mostly assembled from pre-existing characters from throughout its 13-season-and-counting run), and laying out the ways the proposed series would differ from its parent. (Mostly, apparently, by not being centered on a bunch of apocalyptically suicidal, emotionally closed-off men.) The show’s cast expressed their sadness at the news today, with several highlighting how good it would have been to have another woman-led sci-fi/fantasy/horror series—especially one with such a strong focus on teamwork and sisterhood—on primetime TV.
