The Daily Show adds three correspondents to its fake-news team
When the “best f*&#ing news team ever” assembles under its new leader on The Daily Show With Trevor Noah later this month, it will welcome a few new members. Comedy Central issued a press release today announcing the addition of three correspondents who will, among other things, help cover what looks like the “indecisionest” (how many Republican candidates are there again?) of Indecision campaigns a.k.a. the 2016 presidential campaign.
First up—alphabetically, anyway—is Ronny Chieng, whose stand-up has taken off in Australia, where he’s been named one of the country’s top 10 comedians. He’s won lots of awards down under, including one for “best newcomer” at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2012. Chieng has opened for Bill Burr, Dave Chappelle, and Bob Saget. He made his U.S. TV premiere on The Late Late Show in February.
Actress Desi Lydic will join Chieng in standing before green screens to deliver the fake news. Lydic studied improv at The Groundlings and Improv Olympic, and she currently stars as Valerie Marks on MTV’s Awkward. Lydic got her start in Not Another Teen Movie, and in 2013 appeared in The Babymakers with Paul Schneider (Parks And Recreation) and Daily Show alum Olivia Munn. She’s also appeared in sitcoms like The League and Raising Hope.
The Daily Show has also nabbed Roy Wood, Jr., a comedian who was one of the finalists on Comedy Central’s “Laugh Riots” competition in 2002. He’s also done some TV work on Sullivan And Son and regularly appears on Conan and @Midnight. Wood’s stand-up has been described as “thought-provoking comedy [that] crosses cultural lines,” which should come in handy in his new role.
The Daily Show With Trevor Noah premieres September 28, which means Chieng, Lydic, and Wood might have just enough time to scrub their online presence of questionable and/or offensive material. Then again, new host Noah didn’t get that memo, and he seems to have turned out okay.
