The Daredevil season one trailer gives Netflix a man without fear

Netflix has released its trailer for the first season of Daredevil, and it’s…very serious. The expression “dark and gritty” gets thrown around a lot when it comes to superhero reboots, but that has primarily been the territory of DC, who never met a comic book hero they wouldn’t rather prevent from smiling. But now here comes Daredevil, the blind crimefighter, and judging from these two minutes, “dark” and “gritty” were the first two words written across the top of the writers’ room whiteboard. Don’t get us wrong—the lawyer-turned-vigilante has always inhabited a slightly grimier alley of the Marvel universe, but this trailer feels a bit joyless. The cast is aces, though. Vincent D’Onofrio makes for a fitting Wilson Fisk, all self-righteousness and menacing villainy. You’ve got Rosario Dawson, Deborah Ann Woll, and best of all, Scott Glenn as Matt Murdock’s mentor-in-violence. Here’s hoping the actual show doesn’t dispense with the pleasure quite as whole-heartedly as this trailer threatens. Otherwise Netflix will have to change its tagline to “Daredevil: The Man Without Fun!” Season one begins streaming in full on April 10.
