The Dark Crystal sequel that never seems to happen isn't happening again
Back in 2010, it was reported that the decades-long attempt to craft a sequel to Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal was at last making some serious, albeit qualified progress: The Power Of The Dark Crystal had a Henson-originated storyline, original fantasy artist Brian Froud on board as an adviser, and a commitment to using live puppetry and animatronics, as opposed to going a purely CGI route. On the other hand, it was being directed by Daybreakers’ Peter and Michael Spierig rather than fan-supported favorite Genndy Tartakovsky, it would blend those live puppets with motion-capture characters, and it was looking increasingly like yet another 3-D reboot of a nostalgia property, rather than the proper continuation that most had been expecting all these years. So, some appropriately bad, albeit qualified news: That somewhat-dubious sequel is once again off, The Playlist reports, with the Spierigs now abandoning it for another project, and producers at Omnilab cutting ties with The Jim Henson Company and removing all financing, leaving its future once more in doubt for a while. See you next year, Dark Crystal sequel rumor.
