The Devil and The Alienist vie for your attention tonight

Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Monday, January 22. All times are Eastern.

Top pick

The Alienist (TNT, 9 p.m.): When a homicidal maniac is on the loose in 1890s New York City, who’s future-president Teddy Roosevelt gonna call? Dr. Laszlo Kreizler (Daniel Brühl)! The Inglourious Basterds and Captain America: Civil War actor stars as the eponymous alienist, a kind of forensic psychologist before Quantico ever existed, who’s brought in to solve a series of murders of young male sex workers. Rounding out the rest of the investigative team are a newspaper illustrator (Luke Evans) and a plucky police secretary (Dakota Fanning, who definitely does not just file paperwork). Genevieve Valentine has dusted off her magnifying glass and deerstalker for the occasion.

Lucifer (Fox, 8 p.m.): Inspector Morningstar (Tom Ellis) and the gang return from their early winter slumber in “All About Her,” which is all about the fallout from midseason revelations, like Marcus Pierce’s (Tom Welling) true identity. So many handsome Toms, how does LaToya Ferguson keep them straight?

Regular coverage

Supergirl (The CW, 8 p.m.)

Wild card

Mosaic (HBO, 8 p.m.): Steven Soderbergh’s new HBO series has an interactive element to it, but that’s only available in app. But as our own Alex McLevy tells it, Mosaic is a solid drama that unfolds without any need for a gimmick, and Sharon Stone leads a great ensemble in this limited series about the aftermath of a crime in a secluded area. Watch or play along over the next five nights.
