The director of I Am Love returns with A Bigger Splash
A Bigger Splash—the title presumably taken from David Hockney’s celebrated painting of a California pool—marks director Luca Guadagnino’s first feature since his breakthrough, I Am Love. A remake of Jacques Deray’s 1969 French hit La Piscine, the movie reunites Guadagnino with I Am Love star Tilda Swinton, who takes over the Romy Schneider role here, playing a rock star who takes off for Sicily with her filmmaker boyfriend (the recently ubiquitous Matthias Schoenaerts, in a role originally played by Alain Delon) while recovering from a throat operation.
There, they run into one of her exes (Ralph Fiennes, filling in for Maurice Ronet) and his daughter (Dakota Johnson, in the Jane Birkin role), and… well, this initial teaser is intentionally vague about what happens. Plus, early word from the Venice Film Festival is that Guadagnino has significantly tweaked the original’s plot, but let’s just say that someone ends up dead.
A Bigger Splash is due to hit American screens on May 13, 2016.
