In its short existence, Anybody’s Flowers has become a label that skirts simple classifications. Though it’s an imprint of artisanal hardcore label Deathwish Inc. and is run by Patrick Kindlon of Self Defense Family, Anybody’s Flowers is less concerned with one specific style and is focused almost entirely on substance. The latest release comes by way of The Down House, a project between Casey Colby and Sarah Davis that features a rotating cast of friends at live shows. The A.V. Club is premiering the video for “Ghosts,” a dreamy, driving track from the band’s upcoming 7-inch. It’s a song built upon a steady back beat, as Colby and Davis piece together a consuming ambient wash, then pull pop hooks out of that ether. It’s the type of thing that could be called shoegaze, but it’s got a quasi-hardcore edict undercutting it. Just as quickly as “Ghosts” establishes a mood it works to destroy it, showing that The Down House doesn’t have much use for contentment.
