The Elfquest movie is off again, this time because of The Hobbit

After four years of being listed as in development—and decades before that of attempts to adapt it to film and TV screens—a movie based on Richard and Wendy Pini’s Elfquest is once again off at Warner Bros., which is just the latest studio to try to bring the cult comic to life. The Pinis broke the news over at the official Elfquest Facebook page, explaining that the studio finally dropped the project after years of stalling, finally deciding that it might not be a good idea to make another fantasy film involving magical little people when they’ve already got The Hobbit. Of course, a fear that it would create competition is a bit silly, considering that's pretty much where the similarities end. After all, Elfquest’s magical little people hail from space, are descended from aliens, ride wolves, and occasionally have elf orgies—none of which bears much resemblance to what you’ll see in The Hobbit, unless Peter Jackson has gone mad with power. Nevertheless, the Pinis say that having The Hobbit interfere with finally getting an Elfquest adaptation made after all this time “was a possibility, among several, that we were prepared for,” charitably shying away from suggesting that the studio might have realized this could be a problem, you know, four years ago.
