The Emmys decree that late night talk shows are not specials (and vice-versa)

After years of late night shows like The Daily Show and The Late Show competing against one-off music specials and awards shows in the Emmys, the TV academy announced this week that the writing and directing categories for said programs are being split into two: one writing award for variety series, one for specials, one directing award for variety series, and one for specials. In March, the academy eliminated the award for "outstanding performance in a variety series or special"—thereby enraging the always-a-bridesmaid Stephen Colbert—but by dividing up the directing and writing categories, the Emmy folks have now eliminated a problem that TV fans deeply cared about for roughly two minutes every year.
