The Exquisites return with a soulful rocker, “Count On Me”

The Exquisites’ are a punk band out of time, which is not to say it deals in classic punk like The Clash or the Ramones. Instead, it’s basically a soul band that’s willing to get a little angry. Though it’s been a few years since its last release, Phat ‘n’ Phunky records is releasing a new 7-inch from the band, and The A.V. Club is streaming the first side today. “Count On Me” sees vocalist Jason Clackley as soulful as ever, crooning atop the band’s powerful stomp before a horn section joins in on the song’s simple, three-word chorus. In a way, “Count On Me” plays like The National picking up the pace and kicking on the distortion, making for a soulful rocker that isn’t afraid to get a little loud.

Pre-orders for The Exquisites’ new 7-inch are available now.
