Fans of John Green’s phenomenal young adult novel, The Fault In Our Stars, have long awaited the film adaptation that could turn the Vlogbrother into a household name. The first trailer, which premiered back in January, highlighted some of the book’s iconic moments and introduced Shailene Woodley as Hazel and Ansel Elgort as Gus. This newly released extended trailer gives an even better sense of the juxtaposition of existential musings and down-to-earth reality that made the story of a teen with cancer feel anything but trite.
This new trailer remixes many shots from the first as well as that (intentionally) pretentious scene about cigarettes that launched a thousand parodies after it premiered at the MTV Movie Awards. It also offers up our first glimpse of Mike Birbiglia as Patrick, the cheery, guitar-playing support group leader who proves to be the bane of Hazel’s existence. While any trailer is going to transform the book’s melancholy into something slightly more perky, this extended version seems to indicate that the film has a good handle on the quiet little moments—like Hazel talking to her parents about “taking pot” or having an awkward encounter with her shirt—that made the novel so strong. The film hits theaters on June 6. Okay? Okay.
