The Fall's Mark E. Smith made a World Cup song for some reason
The rather ignoble genre of “World Cup songs” barely deserves mention, unless you’re making fun of New Order, but The Fall’s Mark E. Smith has given us reason to pay attention again with his new “England’s Heartbeat.” Recorded with the one-off band Shuttleworth—and explicitly not as part of The Fall’s estimable canon—England’s unofficial World Cup theme nevertheless fits right in with Smith’s oft-expressed fascination with the sport of football (which Americans call “kickapoo”), dating back to early Rough Trade single “Kicker Conspiracy” and continuing through “Theme From Sparta F.C.,” and here’s where we’re required to once again link to this video of him reading the match results. Smith delves into that fascination in typically loveably cranky fashion in the Times, but since he quite astutely acknowledges that “Yanks don’t have a clue about football,” let’s just talk about the music: In grand World Cup song tradition, it’s really sort of embarrassing, with a sing-along chorus that actually includes the phrase, “Like a rainbow through a storm.” Luckily it’s got fucking Mark E. Smith on it. It sees official release on June 7, but you can watch the video below.
