The filmmakers behind Making A Murderer are taking on Big Pharma
Seven months after garnering critical acclaim for Making A Murderer—their 10-episode documentary series about the life of convicted murder suspect/prosecutorial punching bag Steven Avery—filmmakers Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos have lined up their next project. Moving from small-town crime drama to Big Pharma legal wrangling, Ricciardi and Demos are taking on pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson with an adaptation of Steven Brill’s Huffington Post article “America’s Most Admired Lawbreaker.”
Published last year, Brill’s article is an exhaustive, 15-chapter breakdown of the company’s legal and business practices, including claims that it knowingly subverted the law to market drugs to doctors serving protected populations like children and the elderly. The new series will dramatize Brill’s work as a scripted series, with Ricciardi and Demos directing, and production duties handled by Sonar Entertainment and George Clooney’s Smokehouse Pictures. No network has been announced for the show yet, but given how well Making A Murderer reportedly did for Netflix, it wouldn’t be surprising if the streaming service tried to lure Ricciardi and Demos back for another dose of documentary magic.
