The media—ourselves included—talked about the Sony hack so much last year that we’d completely understand if you never wanted to hear about it again. Unfortunately, it was a big dramatic thing that happened in Hollywood, so we’re going to keep hearing about it until the next big dramatic thing happens in Hollywood. On that note, filmmakers Jehane Noujaim and Karim Amer have announced that they’re developing a documentary about the Sony hack that’s apparently going to “drop new bombshells.”
That comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which adds that the film will “put forth alternative theories about the hack’s culprit.” As you definitely recall because it only happened a few months ago, the FBI determined that the hack came from somewhere in the direction of North Korea, and that it was retaliation over how disappointing The Interview was—or something like that. One of these alternative theories will reportedly pin the blame on someone within Sony, because the attack required “intimate knowledge of the architecture of Sony’s servers.”
Noujaim and Amer are the duo behind 2013’s critically acclaimed documentary The Square, which followed the Egyptian revolution of 2011. Amer referred to the Sony hack as “an important chapter” in a “larger issue,” adding that some experts have declared it “the 9/11 of cyberattacks” and that its “implications will be felt for years to come.”
