The Final Girls puts a hilariously meta twist on ’80s slashers

The Final Girls presents a cool twist on the horror formula, by forcing present-day teens to relive an ’80s formulaic slasher flick. Max (Taissa Farmiga) is still mourning the death of her mom (Malin Akerman), a B-movie scream queen who appeared in Camp Bloodbath, a Friday The 13th equivalent in the world of the film. Through a series of unfortunate events, Max and her friends (including Thomas Middleditch, Alia Shawkat, and Nina Dobrev) end up in the world of the film and must use the rules of the slasher genre to try to survive.

The film, directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson, played incredibly well at SXSW, with standing ovations and applause breaks after arguably the funniest striptease ever recorded and the most heartfelt boob flash in cinematic history. Take The Cabin In The Woods and set it in the ’80s, and that approaches what the film is like.

The Final Girls is due in theaters this Halloween.
