As we reported back in January, Kevin Tanchareon’s Mortal Kombat reboot has taken the form of a live-action web series—not quite the triumphant, hard-R return to the big screen promised by his viral hit Mortal Kombat: Rebirth trailer, but hopefully still an improvement over, say, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. The first episode of that series is now online, and like Rebirth, it’s pretty slick for a web video. Here Michael Jai White reprises his Rebirth role as “Jax” Briggs, aided by Jeri Ryan’s Lt. Sonya Blade and Battlestar Galactica and Dollhouse star Tahmoh Penikett as Kurtis Stryker. Though there’s plenty of fighting and gunplay, there’s no actual, you know, Mortal Kombat ring action here—let alone any fatalities—but it’s just getting started.
