The first full Beauty And The Beast trailer hits all the familiar beats

If you know the story of Disney’s Beauty And The Beast—and, of course, you do—the trailer for the live action adaptation is not going to surprise with plot details. All the familiar beats are contained within. Belle (Emma Watson) wanders into a creepy castle to save her father, meets a testy Beast (Dan Stevens), and chats with some furniture. What is new is the lavish—one might say even gaudy—production design. The finery in the Beast’s lair is positively rococo, and that also goes for characters like Cogsworth (Ian McKellen) and Lumière (Ewan McGregor). As for the performances: McGregor sounds like he’s doing the most over-the-top French accent you could possibly imagine, while Stevens is unrecognizable, both physically and vocally.

This look at the film offers no snippets of any musical numbers, though it does rely on some bombastic orchestration. Still, with additional songs promised, the film can’t just be a rehash of the original. Beauty And The Beast is due out in theaters March 17, 2017.
