The first trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens might premiere this week
It feels like it has been a shockingly long time since we wrote anything about Star Wars. After all, the movie finally has an official title and all of the casting announcements were made a long time ago. Now, though, we have a chance to go back to the days of rampant speculation that once defined Star Wars news coverage thanks to a new rumor that has bubbled up from the Dagobah-sized swamp that is the Internet.
Last week, /Film squashed rumors that the trailer for The Force Awakens would premiere with The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies, citing a “very credible source” that believes Disney has “bigger plans” for it. Now, multiple “very good” sources have reportedly told /Film that the trailer will be shown in a “limited number of theaters during the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend.” Though nothing about this is official or confirmed at all, /Film’s understanding seems to be that this will be a specific event at these theaters, and that the trailer won’t be attached to any films in particular.
Nothing about that rumor seems any more believable than the earlier one about The Hobbit, but two separate posts on Reddit this weekend actually seem to give it a little bit more weight. The first, which was posted on the site’s Star Wars board, says the trailer will be “attached to most if not all films in select theaters” starting on November 28. The user, Crichton252 (which might not be his real name), claims he got the information from “an internal email” that he, of course, cannot post.
The second thread was started on Reddit’s general movies board, but that one has been mysteriously removed—probably due to the fact that it didn’t actually provide a source for its information. All that remains from it is the claim that the trailer will “debut next weekend,” but deeper in the thread, the original poster commented that he was able to “confirm everything” and that the trailer will be 97 seconds long and run in front of every showing of every movie from November 28 to November 30. One guy in the Internet claiming to have confirmed something as true doesn’t make it so, and neither does three guys claiming the same thing, but it is certainly possible that the first trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be attached to every movie during the coming weekend. We’ll know for sure in a few days, unless Disney actually comes forward and makes an official announcement.
Oh, and speaking of Star Wars rumors, fansite Making Star Wars claims to have uncovered a GIF from the Force Awakens trailer that shows a computer-generated Millennium Falcon flying toward the screen and shooting a bunch of lasers. We’re a little more confident that this one is definitely bullshit, though, since a CG spaceship from Star Wars would pretty much be the easiest thing to fake ever. Plus, Disney is apparently not even trying to scrub it from the Internet, which it would probably do if a little GIF were to spoil any of its precious trailer. So, like with all articles about Star Wars rumors, we’re going to leave this one knowing literally nothing more than we did at the beginning. Only a Sith would go into an article about Star Wars expecting to actually learn more about Star Wars, anyway.
