The first trailer for The Hobbit: The Battle Of Five Armies puts the end in sight
Clearly looking forward to the day when it can finally bundle the three Hobbit movies together with The Lord Of The Rings trilogy in one 30-pound Blu-ray set, New Line Cinema has released a trailer for The Hobbit: The Battle Of Five Armies, which it dubs “The Defining Chapter Of The Middle-Earth Saga.” The trailer teases events those who have read The Hobbit have been looking forward to since the first movie premiered—like Smaug the dragon setting a town ablaze—as well as events readers didn’t know they were looking forward to because they weren’t in the book before Peter Jackson fixed it, like a shot of Cate Blanchett’s Galadriel weeping over a wounded Gandalf.
The trailer is definitely on the glum side, packed with close-ups of Bilbo and company looking very worried about something, all while the slow, sad song Pippin sang in The Return Of The King plays in the background. This third movie of the second trilogy of the six-film cycle will be released on December 17, and the long watch to see how many movies producers think they can wring out of The Silmarillion will begin.
