The Flaming Lips' Guinness World Record attempt keeps getting more and more ridiculous
The Flaming Lips’ attempt at breaking the Guinness World Record for most shows in a day is shaping up to be more and more ridiculous. The run of eight shows on June 27 and 28 have now been looped into the O Music Awards, a “digitally driven event that celebrates and honors the artists, fans, and innovators impacting digital music culture.” This means the Lips will be joined on stage by various award show presenters and musical acts, including Jackass’ Chris Pontius, Jackson Browne, and Karmin. This is in addition to the acts the Lips were already playing the shows with, like Grimes, Gary Clark Jr., and Neon Indian.
The O Music Awards will stream live throughout that entire 24-hour run of shows, hopping on The Flaming Lips’ vintage bus, Endeavor, with the band. The awards—and thus the run at the world record—will be sponsored by Capital One, Honda, SK Energy, State Farm, Starbucks Frappuccino, Samsung, Virgin Mobile, and Universal Pictures’ TED, presumably meaning the Lips’ backup dancers will be dressed as giant teddy bears and the confetti in the band’s cannons will be replaced with miniature credit card applications and insurance forms. And maybe lead singer Wayne Coyne’s lyrics will no longer be about life and love, but rather about realizing that traditional cell phone contracts are for suckers.
