The Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne is going on a wacky tour of record stores, slowly turning into Willy Wonka
Wayne Coyne is taking his wacky self on tour this holiday season. The Flaming Lips frontman will be making stops at a number of record stores December 19-22, including Permanent Records in Chicago and Grimey’s in Nashville. Coyne will be signing copies of the Lips’ first-ever EP, 1984’s The Flaming Lips 1st EP and 1983’s The Flaming Lips 2nd Cassette Demo, both of which are being reissued on vinyl this month.
While on tour, Coyne will also be slinging a super-limited-edition version of the EP, which—true to outlandish Lips form—will come packaged in an “anatomically correct and life-sized… hand-crafted, custom-made solid chocolate skull.” As if that weren’t incentive enough for nerdy record collectors, every chocolate skull comes packaged with a gold coin that can be used for admission at any Flaming Lips headlining show in the world. It’s an inventive idea, if not also a sign that Coyne is officially off the deep end in his slow transformation into rock’s Willy Wonka. Next thing you know, he'll turn some fan into a blueberry.
