The Girl Scouts are introducing badges for cybersecurity

At the risk of inspiring headline writers everywhere to make a lot of ill-advised “cookie” puns, the Girl Scouts have announced that they’ll soon be offering cybersecurity badges to their young members. Per Broadly, the organization has just announced that it’s partnering with a tech security firm to offer classes, training, and sash-based acknowledgment to encourage young women to take an interest in online safety.

The classes offered range from basic lessons in staying safe online—protecting your identity, other basic data security—for younger kids, all the way up to full “white hat” hacking for older students. “At Girl Scouts of the USA, we recognize that in our increasingly tech-driven world, future generations must possess the skills to navigate the complexities and inherent challenges of the cyber realm,” the company’s CEO said in a press release today; at present, women make up only 11 percent of the rapidly growing cybersecurity industry.
