With Phil Lord and Chris Miller on board as directors, the Han Solo spinoff movie in the works is bound to have a sense of humor. Now, in a new interview with Variety, Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy explains that it’s also going to have a Western feel. After describing the upcoming Rogue One a World War II-style movie—a detail we already knew—Kennedy said that the Han Solo project “moves closer to a heist or Western type feel.” That aesthetic is a natural fit for the character, especially in the pre-A New Hope days wherein he was presumably even more of a rascal. Plus, it’s not like the original trilogy doesn’t draw from that canon.
Kennedy also added that the genre’s influences will shine through in the palette of the movie. “We’ve talked about [Frederic] Remington and those primary colors that are used in his paintings defining the look and feel of the film,” she notes. Remington, if you’re not familiar, was a painter and sculptor of the American West, largely working in the 19th Century. The film recently added Emilia Clarke in a unknown role, and Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian. Alden Ehrenreich, who does look good in a cowboy hat, is in the lead.
