The Handmaid’s Tale showrunner Bruce Miller says they're aware of the show's mishandling of race
One of the most common criticisms of Margeret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale and its Hulu adaptation is that race is never examined critically in the main narrative. In Atwood’s novel, black people are briefly mentioned as being rounded up and segregated, but that’s about it.
In the television series, things fair slightly better. There are actually characters of color on screen, but the show doesn’t consider how these characters’ lives would be any different in an oppressive theocratic regime, nor does it examine the racial dynamics between white handmaids and handmaids of color, which many critics find puzzling considering the show’s focus on reproductive servitude, and the American government’s history of infringing on the reproductive rights of black, Latinx, and native women. The Handmaid’s Tale showrunner Bruce Miller tells us that these issues are on their radar, and season two will at least begin to address them.
